growing food is rewarding in so many ways, finding food
is a whole different thrill. there are so many things that grow in our backyards and local hiking trails that are perfectly edible.
once the weather starts warming up and we have a good rain, the mushrooms start popping up. i read that the morel season parallels with the beginning and end of the dogwood’s bloom. with the dogwoods in full force we went hunting for mushrooms and came home with a good amount of morels.
i cooked up a simple feast of local asparagus and snap peas, our morels and a side of risotto. so flavorful and fulfilling…
this weekend, take a walk through the woods, along the riverbeds and look for some morels. they are very distinct looking mushrooms, hard to mistake for poisonous ones, but please do your research first.

These were found near a swift moving river. They were found close to trees with moss on them and not altogehter. I would bet we were hunting for about 2 hours to gather up all of these.
What a find! Did you tend to find them growing all together, or just here and there…? And were they growing near the roots of trees?
We used to have a few at the foot of an oak tree near my family home growing up, but though I’ve bought them since, I haven’t seen any growing.
I have a recipe I used to make while I lived in Burgundy a few years ago, for chicken with morels in cream sauce, which I so loved.
Your meal – the local asparagus, the risotto – sounds wonderful!
