i am so excited to share one of my favorite homes in athens. located in the historical boulevard neighborhood, the street is filled with colorful homes, big front porches, blooming gardens, and children running from house to house- it is such a kind and welcoming community.
the owners, julie and paul live here with their wonderful sons: henry and wyatt. paul is a UGA professor of environmental history and julie teaches modern dance at emory university and also owns a local studio; floorspace. the two have such a great sense of design and color which compliments this house nicely. their collections of local artwork as well as antique and new furniture fill the home and keep the eye moving from room to room. my favorite parts of this house are the tall ceilings, the giant front porch, and the many large windows througout that welcomes natural light.
thanks julie and paul (and henry and wyatt) for sharing your home!
when we first moved into this house, we didn’t have much furniture and i thought we should just leave this hallway empty – it would make a pretty funky dance studio. i think this is my favorite room in the house.
the peace flags were by kristen bach, rug design by lou kregel, grasshopper print by marci white (on the right), drawings by august roland (on the left), wall hanging we bought in oodi, botswana, painting/collage by jonathan blum. i feel like i have a connection or story to go with just about everything in this photo
a view from the living room through the dining room to the kitchen. i’ve been working with my friend and colleague, zap mc connell, on a solo and used this long passage way to help me define how I would space the piece. zap will be here this summer to help me expand upon this idea. In the dining room on the yellow wall is a painting by andy cherewick. Paul and I both loved this painting right away.
when my grandmother died a few years ago, i inherited some of her furniture, this dining room table, the chairs, and the sideboard in the back. when this was all delivered and I opened the cupboards and drawers, the smell of her house and even her neighborhood came wafting out. it was amazing. i think a little bit of that smell still lingers. it’s northern california, eucalyptus and the pacific ocean.
some of paul’s good friends gave us the green cabinet as a wedding present. i’ll never forget them presenting it to us at our wedding. they piled in their car with this thing and drove from NYC to ohio. the red lamp by the window was made by ryan adams.
the rabbi painting above the green cabinet is by our friend jon blum. this was his wedding gift to us.
my family had a raspberry farm in ohio and that photo of the berries above the door, taken by judith smith, was on the cover of “the ohio farmer” magazine in 1981. she gave that to us when we got married.
this painting, by our friend and neighbor philip juras, was a gift to my husband on our 10th anniversary. we love philip’s work and this piece fits beautifully in the hall.
I used to avoid walking into this room altogether – it was filled with chaotic piles as well as being where we watched tv. This year we had these shelves built in, moved some furniture around and laid a soft rug down. the built-ins make a huge difference. i love it! the table there in the center is an old wood box from Paul’s childhood. it’s covered in old stickers – and probably our most functional piece of furniture.

this bedframe is one of the first pieces of furniture we bought together. i think i was quite pregnant and the futon on the floor just wasn’t working for me anymore.
i almost bought this piece from lou kregel a year ago, and just asked her a month or so ago if it was still for sale – i’m so happy to have it in our bedroom, though i think she might kind of miss it. i like how you framed the fireplace and candle in both mirrors. In the long mirror, i can just see the quilt hanging on the bed that my sister made us as a wedding present.
each bathroom has a beautiful claw foot bathtub. this is the spacious master bath, all of the windows make it a bright and relaxing space.
wyatt making his bed. it’s a quirky space, but it works well as the boys’ bedroom.
we found this rug at a giant flea market in atlanta right after we bought this house. the pottery comes from our boys, who have spent many hours at good girt.
susannah zucker asked us if we’d kindly keep her sculpture on our porch as her studio was getting too cramped. i love this lady – and it is so intriguing to our sons’ friends. we found this excellent farm table out at Needful Things. the school chairs we’ve had since we lived in lawrence, KS 12 years ago. my grandmother used to say, “i love every color, as long as it’s blue.” she would love this picture. ****we’ve had some pretty great parties on this porch.

I love the color of the outside of your home.
I wish I new the paint color so I could paint my home in Nova Scotia that color.

Wow, love your house, I was looking to buy one of Lou’s rugs and happened on your site. We live in Brighton but also have our beloved home on Buena Vista Ave. deb x
I would love to have the color of my house like that, don’t know what my neighbors thinks. I live in New England people are kind of cold than what I’m used to in the tropics.I love porches and loved the natural flow of furnishings. Thanks for sharing!
I loved seeing this! I think it’s so nice to allow your space to evolve in this way, by slowly acquiring things that mean something. Lovely light in the house, and great porch, too.
