little building cafe, starkville, mississppi
a little building sits on a little side street in starkville, mississippi.
inside is a little cafe.
opened by brother and sister ted & annie crawford, this tiny space has big aims: to serve good food that is sourced sustainably, and to do it all in a fresh, modern space.
once a dry cleaners, annie and her husband caleb- both architects- turned their attention to the building when they relocated to starkville from brooklyn. having the time and energy to focus on a project of their own, they put their big city ideas to work by giving the space natural light via a pop-top skylight, enlisiting friends & colleagues to help with the design such as ceramicist lubna chowdhary
,and finally, and most dazzlingly, fabricating their own chairs.
combing through thrift stores and junk shops nearby, annie created her chairs by taking them apart and re-combining their components, throwing in a wayward rolling pin or shoeform or two. the all-white ones read almost cubist, while the blue ones are given hints of color that add a lively punch. they enliven the space, and are comfortable to boot. sitting in one while eating a freshly kneaded biscuit is a delight. the menu changes daily, but expect to find soups, homemade muffins, and a lot of love and spirit.
this little spot has given starkville, and the south, something to be proud of.
