well, summer and its heat finally seem to be coming to an end. my visions of loads of perenials kind of fell by the wayside as the sunflowers created too much shade and the pokeberries kept growing bigger and bigger until they shaded everything else out. oh well, i love the pokeberries. next year i’ll only let one or two get going, and i’ll keep the sunflowers on the sidelines. already i’m envisioning next years garden; more iris, more perenials, more sun. i’ll wait till the last of summers’ heat is gone though, before i start that project.

end of summer
in the country
late summer in the ideas shack
homes and habitats
last week i stopped by to visit rebecca in her ideas shack and see what she was working on. the ideas shack was full of new growth; creatively and in the garden. there were reminders of summer scattered throughout and lovely vines peaking in through the holes in the walls, bringing in new life.
some details from the studio…
boiled peanuts. snack food of the south
garden to table
people are starting to harvest their peanut crops and green peanuts are starting to show up at the farmers markets and grocers across the south. if you have never had a boiled peanut before, they are worth trying.
to make boiled peanuts, get a couple of pounds of green peanuts and wash them well. soak them in cold water for about 30 minutes. place green peanuts, salt, and water into a large pan and bring to a boil. boil for 5-6 hours, uncovered. you can add flavors to the peanuts while they are boiling. i like to add a head of garlic and 4-5 spicy peppers.
when they are done….start snacking.
don’t have the time to wait 5-6 hours to cook, take a drive into the country. you’ll be sure to bump into a boiled peanut stand!
moss is the new spray paint
instant inspiration
as you probably have noticed we love things with peeled paint and frayed edges- things that are aged, rustic, and sometimes even falling apart. i recently read about moss graffiti , you can imagine how excited i was to find out about this simple craft. click here to find instructions on how easy it to make your own moss graffiti wall.
and here at environmental grafitti to read another great article.
