seasonal bloom

October 13th, 2009

i spent a long stretch of time in maine this summer, as i have the past 5 summers. i go with my family each year, driving the distance from georgia.
i am continually inspired by its beauty, people, and the life there. this week, i am sharing what i saw.

i learned to love arranging flowers from my mom. mostly we do not do fancy things, we just like to have something fresh from the garden to look at while we are inside, to remind us of what lay beyond. here, my mom began with some dahlias & zinnias from the garden. on sequential days, hikes yielded additions: one day, some rue was added by our friend wendy. the next day, a branch covered in lichen appeared, courtesy of my sister lucy.

at some point, some dried fennel entered the picture. i love how everyone spontaneously contributed to it.

BLUEBERRIES, low-bush

garden to table

we love our southern beauty, but there’s beauty everywhere . rinne recently spent time in maine, so here’s a week of posts of beauty elsewhere.

in maine, they grow low-bush blueberries. they grow wild in meadows they call barrrens. they grow so low that you can pass by them and hardly know they are there.

2_blueberry stand

one of my favorite things to discover in maine are the ‘honor system’ roadside stands- unmanned, they sit, full of that day’s bounty- be it veggies, flowers or, in this case, blueberries.

another patron pulled up as i was walking back to the car and said that that was probably the last of the bluberries for the season…

we hurried home and made compote by simply cooking the blueberries on high, then simmering on low ’til they began to thicken, stirring occasionally. we added no sugar or honey, since they turned sweet on their own. we drizzled the compote on my mom’s homemade ice cream, on my leftover birthday cake, and on our pancakes the next morning. it made everything better.

a good reminder to enrich your life with art…….

HERB & DOROTHY tells the extraordinary story of Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk, and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history with very modest means. In the early 1960s, when very little attention was paid to Minimalist and Conceptual Art, Herb and Dorothy Vogel quietly began purchasing the works of unknown artists. Devoting all of Herb’s salary to purchase art they liked, and living on Dorothy’s paycheck alone, they continued collecting artworks guided by two rules: the piece had to be affordable, and it had to be small enough to fit in their one-bedroom Manhattan apartment. Within these limitations, they proved themselves curatorial visionaries; most of those they supported and befriended went on to become world-renowned artists including Sol LeWitt, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Richard Tuttle, Chuck Close, Robert Mangold, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Lynda Benglis, Pat Steir, Robert Barry, Lucio Pozzi, and Lawrence Weiner.

After thirty years of meticulous collecting and buying, the Vogels managed to accumulate over 2,000 pieces, filling every corner of their tiny one bedroom apartment. “Not even a toothpick could be squeezed into the apartment,” recalls Dorothy. In 1992, the Vogels decided to move their entire collection to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. The vast majority of their collection was given as a gift to the institution. Many of the works they acquired appreciated so significantly over the years that their collection today is worth millions of dollars. Still, the Vogels never sold a single piece. Today Herb and Dorothy still live in the same apartment in New York with 19 turtles, lots of fish, and one cat. They’ve refilled it with piles of new art they’ve acquired.

HERB & DOROTHY is directed by first time filmmaker Megumi Sasaki. The film received the Golden Starfish Award for the Best Documentary Film and Audience Award from the 2008 Hamptons International Film Festival. It has also received Audience Awards from the 2008 SILVERDOCS Film Festival and the 2009 Philadelphia Cinefest. Palm Springs International Film Festival named HERB & DOROTHY one of their “Best of Fest” films in 2009.

built by hand from the ground up. an inspiration. a life-long project. in a holler in eastern tennessee, green road called to a woman and her family. living in a barn on the property, they worked, gathering stones for the foundation, all the while tending the soil in the garden for their food.

twenty years and many stories later, they live as woodcarvers, tobacco farmers, and PhD candidates; the children have grown, but not too far. friends nearby live similarly: all with a quiet view, a fresh breeze, and beauty. the house and land, on this particular fall day, made us all want to move, or at least to try to live off the land more. and to remember this, is invigorating.
