snowy fields
in the country
in the south we always dream of a white christmas but know that the odds of that actually happening are pretty slim. well this year we had a dreamy winter wonderland all christmas day. we took a drive and admired all of the fields where the green poked through the melting snow.
a holiday to remember!
howard finster. paradise gardens
homes and habitats
The folk artist Howard Finster’s home is near the little town of Summerville, Georgia. He bought four
acres of land in the 1960’s and began to build his gardens. He was a retired minister and the story goes
that Howard was painting a bike and had a vision that God told him to make sacred art. He set out to
make 5,000 painting and didn’t stop there. He made around 46,000 works of art before he died in 2001.
He built and embellished the gardens around his home with all types of materials. He used bottles,
glass, mirrors, cement, jewelry and much more. The band REM filmed a video around his tower of
rusted bicycle frames.
The day I was there no one else was in the gardens and it was so peaceful. It was overcast and all the
colors popped. There are so many details in each and every part of the garden that it would take hours
to take it all in. If you drove by you would never know any of it was there. It really is a hidden gem of
beauty and well worth the drive.
