birdsong plantation

homes and habitats

south of thomasville, georgia, off highway 319 south, you take a right on meridian road.  it winds past fields , plantation gateways, and old houses. An inconspicuous sign under a tree says ‘birdsong ‘.   park your car, grab a map, and take your pick from twelve miles of  paths mowed through various south georgia landscapes: woods, open fields , pine forests and a  black water  swamp.
the soft earth, covered in pine needles and fall leaves, softens your step so you can tread quietly, the better to listen for the birds in each area.  i heard a lot of hawks and crows when i was there, and the fall breezes rustling the golden leaves on the hickory tree.
