a DIY guide to oyster roasting

garden to table

the other day our friends gathered to celebrate the birthday of our friend catie.  we roasted up a bushel of apalachicolan oysters.

read on to find out how to roast em’ at home!

build a fire

get some oysters

wash your oysters one by one

try to get all of the sand and grit out

make some cocktail sauce by mixing ketchup and horse radish together

get some burlap, we went to our local coffee roaster and got some coffee bags they work great

take a flat piece of metal and place it over the fire.  we used a scrap of roofing

place the oysters on the metal, cover with burlap and wet the burlap with a hose

check to see if the oysters have opened slightly

done!

crack them open, we used a screw driver

serve along side the cocktail sauce, horse radish and some saltines

they pair nicely with a cold one

yum!

Oysters on the half shell are a great love of mine, but I always eat them in restaurants (and usually, raw). The roasting sounds like lots of fun, though; I love seeing your process.
