winter kale soup

garden to table

March 14th, 2011

as i am reminded every year around this time, the weather just can’ t make up it’s mind.  it’s hot for a couple of days and the next they are forecasting wintry mix.  and then there is  the pollen, every year they say it is off of the charts.  it is just early spring peeking it’s head around the corner.

while i love the warm days, the inconsistancy always seems to give me a head cold.  last week i got hit with a bad cold and flu.  not so fun.  we ended up making and consuming a lot of soups.  there is nothing more comforting than a good soup loaded with lots of vegetables.

ingredients, mostly anything can be adapted to what you have on hand or what is in season

1 yellow onion

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 green pepper

3 carrots, peeled and diced

4 cloves of garlic

1 large bunch of kale, chopped

3/4 cup dried or fresh black eyed peas

3 cups stock, or whater

water

salt and pepper

directions

-dice the onion and green pepper and saute in olive oil until translucent

-add the carrots and chopped garlic and saute for another couple of minutes

-add the rest of the ingredients and simmer for a couple of hours

-enjoy!  serve along side a piece of rustic bread!

broken mirrors

instant inspiration

March 11th, 2011

we have had some nice days lately, but the evenings have been pretty chilly.  the other morning we woke up early, bundled up, and went for a hike.    the shallow water where the cypress grow had a thin layer of ice that was broken just like a mirror.  i was mesmerized by the reflections and textures that it made.  i love morning hikes!

take a peek at what we saw.

rainy day projects

in the country

March 10th, 2011

march brings lots of wind and rain.  sometimes it’s enough to knock off delicate blooms.  when i hear there’s a big rain coming,  i go outside and cut the prettiest branches i can reach and bring them inside to study in the rainy day light.

normal hardware…a gem

homes and habitats

March 9th, 2011

neighborhood hardware stores are hard to come by these days and this one surely will take you back to the simpler times.  over in the normaltown neighborhood lives this super cute one called normal hardware.  inside it is filled with old treasures, hard to find items, and your standard hardware and tools.  oh and it is the best place in town to get an old school radio flyer.  i love it there!
