today's post is more of a woods to the craft table. lately, i have been doing a lot of natural dyeing for a project that i have been working on. this past week i tried dyeing with acorns. i dyed some wooden beads, but I bet fabric would look lovely too.
ingredients:
1 cup of foraged acorns
1 cup of water
1 cup of white vinegar
rusty nails or other rusty objects
directions
-in a jar, soak your rusty objects in the white vinegar
-let objects soak for 3 days or longer
-soak your acorns in the water for 3 days or longer
-after soaking is complete....heat up acorns and water in a saucepan (add a little more water if necessary)
-remove rusty objects from vinegar and add to acorn mixture
-add what you are wanting to dye and let soak for 5 minutes
-remove the items that you have dyed and rinse and dry
***if you are dyeing fabric or something large you can double or triple recipe

we had a really busy saturday, so on sunday my daughter and i were feeling like laying low in our warm house. ever since she was about 2 she has always loved to be in the kitchen with me cutting veggies, measuring ingredients, and stirring. yesterday we decided to make some pasta together. we had such a fun day and i was reminded how easy it is to make.....and so exciting for the little ones. i have a handy pasta attachment on my kitchenaid mixer which makes the process so easy.
we used this basic pasta dough recipe and the pasta turned out great!
if you want to invest in a pasta making machine i recommend:
kitchenaid attachment or
imperia pasta machine

we were on a walk through a neighborhood in atlanta and saw this sweet garden. i loved the yarn that they used yarn to divide the beds. a little burst of color before the bounty arrives.

we love pressing flowers.... it's a great way to preserve the season! if you don't have a fancy flower press...press them inside of some books and place a big book or two on top. wait a couple of weeks and enjoy!

I made some beads out of clay. When they were dry, I sprayed them with copper spray paint, and packed them into an old coffee can with some hay and small pieces of pine wood. I laid it in the bottom of a backyard fire and burned it a few hours. In the morning, you get to see the interesting results. Next time i will fire with horse manure, as that is supposed to make the clay more black.

This holiday, my nephew, Clay introduced me to a great new cookbook, 'seven fires'. It's all about cooking everything on the fire. I'm a big fire nut. Anything woodfired gets me excited, so I was eager to watch as he placed 4 kobucha squash in the coals. We covered them up and let them cook about an hour. It smelled like roasted pumpkin. After cooking, Clay cut them in half and mixed in some red wine vinegar sauce, arugula, and goat cheese. Yummy!

Fall seems to come and go so quickly that I love to do as much outside as possible to admire the Autumn colors. One of my favorite crafts to do in the fall is collage with leaves. The other day we made peace flags with fallen leaves. They now hang inside for us to admire.
