old places
olar
about 30 miles south of barn well, south carolina, is olar. a well manicured, but deserted town. one of many in the area. there used to be an antique shop in one of them 25 years ago or so, but nothing now. would make a great looking resettlement town! so many cute buildings, and probably cheap!

red painted store
if you're ever heading down hiway 64 from augusta to edisto, stop in olar, sc. and take a look. lots of great spaces to inspire. maybe we need to move down there and start a commune. this one was killing me with its' red painted brick and faded trim.

redcliffe plantation
this state park is located on beech island, sc. it is just south of augusta, ga. it was built in 1857, and served 3 generations of hammonds. it is situated on a high hill to capture the breezes. the central hall has 14 foot ceilings and is over 20 feet wide; it was used for balls and grand occasions. the doors at each end could be opened to get some pleasant ventilation going. there are grand views out the second story doors. it was modernized with bathrooms in the '30's, but otherwise is still in its original shape. there is a slave cabin on the premisis and an allee of old magnolia trees.

old outbuildings
i visited the william harris homestead near monroe, georgia recently. the home was built in 1825 and is still in the same family. the house sits on a hill overlooking the food gardens, and all kinds of intact wood, stone, and brick outbuildings are still in place. a smoke house, a salt house, stables, and several other wonderful old shapes. here's a tour. worth the trip!

old civic center
on my recent trip to central illinois, we stumbled upon this old civic center in the middle of a park. it was obviously old, but it still seemed to be of some function to the town. the massive structure is known for its architecture, in that there are no post supports holding up the octagonal dome. i wish i could have gotten inside!

oconee hill cemetery
recently, i explored oconee hill cemetery...it is such a beautiful place. it runs along the river, tucked away in the shadow of the UGA football stadium. it used to be more open to the public; there was even a footpath cutting through it for students to traverse to and from class, but the path was closed due to a rise in vandalism. it is a shame, because there are beautiful monuments, large old trees and plantings, and, contrary to what many may think, a diverse group of athenians laid to rest here...
