this is the time of year when i am drawn to ikebana. all that is left in the garden are pods and stems, with a few sasanquas here and there. this book from japan always inspires me (i think i may have shared it here before, because i love it so much!). there are some beautiful moments inside it. hopefully it will encourage you to try a simple flower arrangement this winter too!

mandy made some special wreaths this year using dried flowers and pods from her farm, 3 porch farm…they are everlasting! i love all the colors and textures in these wreaths, plus i love that they are on the smaller side too…and so sculptural.

there is not much color left in the garden, between fall and the 60+ dry days we have had. the brightest pop in the garden right now are these mexican sunflowers with their rich orange and velvety petals.

late fall...time to pull weeds, but they are so, so pretty!

last monday we had our 2nd annual flower social out at mandy and steve's flower farm, 3 porch farm. before the frost takes everything out, we like to have a last blast with all the beautiful flowers and foliage. mandy and steve collect buckets and buckets of dahlias, zinnias, cosmos and other flowers. i helped mandy gather some wild persimmon branches weighed down with orange fruit. there are branches of maple and sweet gum and oaks, as well as ornamental grasses, pods, and beautiful cotton. we invite a few ladies out to spend the day arranging flowers to their hearts content. we hung a few backdrops in her unfinished flower workroom, where the light is nice. then we all go to town making insane flower arrangements! after a potluck lunch of wonderful homemade food, we get back to the flowers until we're too tired to do any more.
it's a day i look forward to all year.

we had an abnormally long summer here in georgia, with temperatures in the upper eighties until late september. i think it confused our plants a little bit, but regardless, it made for a beautiful time in the garden.

it is that time of year when things are transitioning...the garden is coming off its summer run and things are dying back or newly emerging...we don't have a lot in flower at the moment- just some straggling green mophead hydrangeas. but, what we do have is a lot of green texture: hosta, fatsia, ferns, redbud leaves, mexican sunflower seedbeds, sea oats, etc.
together they combine to make a portrait of the garden this time of year.

we have had a longer heat than normal this year...because of this, our dahlias are barely hanging in there...it has just been too hot.
so, when our friend mandy dropped off this bouquet of dahlias and cosmos to me, i was so happy! i have been in a dahlia-deficit...enjoy!

it isn't officially fall just yet, but there are signs of it sprouting on the trees and plants around here. pods and seeds are bursting in my favorite colors: copper, dusty pink, pale cinnamon and a light lichen green.

in the garden right now, there are clematis, salvia, morning glory vines, and ripening persimmons...
