The fall colors are waning. A few bright spots here and there, but mostly subtle plays of color, as evidenced here.
I went to the botanical garden the other day and was blown away with a row of sourwood trees in beautiful pinks and reds. They blew my mind. Enjoy.
If you went to art school, you learned about 'color field' paintings. Well, here's the real thing. study up on monochromatic color fields here.
The leaves went crazy for my birthday, and I had the pleasure of being surrounded by golden leaves and blue sky. My friend led me to a tree he'd spotted earlier on a woods walk. It was a persimmon tree deep in the woods that had turned the most wonderful shade of pink! A wonderful birthday present to see.
I saw this trailer on the side of the road, and loved the abstract quality of the windows and the insulation. Not to mention the great colors. It would be great to do a painting of.
On the way to Mt. Airy, North Carolina early one morning, I was impressed by this huge old factory, surrounded by empty stress and the whole thing painted the faintest shade of blue that made the whole thing glow. Here's some pics.
We spent the afternoon in the country at 3 Porch Farm. The butterflies in their flower gardens were so magical!
i went for a woods walk recently after a big rain, and was so glad i did. so many amazing mushrooms in their little environments. enjoy!
We headed to the country to see if the cotton fields were bursting in white yet. I knew it was probably early, they are just getting started. It is just a matter of time to see the white fields.....our southern snow.
We were driving through Stone Mountain Village and came across this BBQ joint. It left us wondering.....
I've always loved pokeberries. They're considered a weed around here, but they are delightful in many ways. The color displays go from red and pale pink to fuchsia and deep purple. The leaves are beautiful in the fall with chartreuse and orange foliage. When the berries get ripe in the fall, you can crush them and a marvelous violet purple juice comes out. I love to study and draw them this time of year. Here's how looking and appreciating becomes art......
Up in Floyd, Virginia, a friend led us to this old copper smelter deep in the woods. It's a mammoth stone chimney, about 20 feet tall. The copper was melted down over a fire at the bottom, and the fire was fed through an opening in the very top. Now the smelter is getting slowly overgrown, it's history slowly being forgotten. Few people know where it is, and even fewer know what it is.

We saw this amazing square building as we rounded a bend. It looked so old timey and more like New England than Virginia, especially in the grey light.
This one was just sitting there, where three country roads come together in Floyd, Virginia. don't ever think your best days are behind you. This one is more beautiful than ever!

this old place is on the side of the road in lexington, georgia. i’ve admired it for years, and finally got out to explore. dream on!
riding around floyd, virginia, recently, i saw lots of amazing old houses and barns. this one is perched on a mountain looking out past an old apple tree out over the green valley. i wouldn’t mind just living there as is, letting it all fall down gradually while i stayed mesmerized by the beauty.

I passed by this old red barn in rural Floyd, Virginia. no one was around, so I stopped and peeked inside. Loving the light peeking through the cracks!

while exploring floyd, virginia, recently, i found old schoolhouse fabrics. whoo-hoo! read the sign: it says ‘come spend the day’. if you can take it! all kinds of rooms full of fabrics and trim. the last stop is an upholstery barn where it’s all $5.98 a yard! lots of fun.
