we are working on a little collaboration with our friend pamela from sweet peach that will debut later this summer. it got us to thinking about some of our favorite road trips around the south...here are a few links to a few that are good for a weekend away, if you are in need of exploring this summer...
- rural studio, alabama
- billy reid's shindig (in august), alabama
- edisto island, SC
- foxfire, north georgia
- campbell folk school
and remember,
we now have our online GUIDE that lists all of our road trip posts from the last 7 years! enjoy!
The Country
almost lost
this one sat by a crossroads in the middle of nowhere. i spied the old chimney and pulled over. as usual, the house was filled with hay, so i couldn't get a good look inside. right next to the house was a brick chimney of a no longer present house .
this time of year it gets harder to explore old shack, what with the bugs, overgrowth and possibility of snakes. usually blackberries or other prickly vines are growing around the house, too. dangers of shack exploring, but always fun!

dream a little dream
i often end up here when driving out in the country. it's a little old store on a crossroads near bostwick. it has roses and iris out front. it's hard to see in, but looks like there's stairs in the back leading to an upstairs apartment. out back is a huge chinaberry tree next to a catalpa tree. pastures all around for miles. it has a for sale sign on it...

reed's odds & ends
one of our favorite junk shops has always been reed's odds & ends in watkinsville, georgia...
unfortunately, a fire recently destroyed much of their building.
these photos are from a few years ago...hopefully, they can rebuild and open back up, as we miss them!
rinne's harvest series
since september of last year, rinne has had a series of photo essays running on the new york times' website, in their T magazine section. the series focuses on harvests across the south, both edible and inedible…
rinne has been working on this series for over four years, and her explorations have taken her across the region. she has discovered so many wonderful, interesting people who interact with nature on a regular basis, yielding something purposeful, beautiful...or both.
here are a few images from her the series so far…enjoy!
a little lamb named fleecy
last week a new lamb, fleecy was born over at sweet olive farm and i knew i had to rush over to meet her. fleecy is sweeter than words and i could watch her prance all day long. a sweet spring babe.

Little Green Shack
i passed this one the other day. it's wrapped in wisteria starting to bud,so i may have to go back and take a pic when it's covered in lilac blooms!

closed up shop
while driving home from florida we passed small town after small towns seeing hundreds of closed up shops. while driving by this one, i caught a glimpse of the interior color and had to turn around. this beauty of a building was aging with a lovely patina of peeling paint and great colors. a charming artist studio waiting to happen.

old depot in Talbotton
when we have the option to take the backroads we always do. the backroads give my eyes a chance to wander and explore and find gems like this. we were heading through the middle of georgia (talbotton) and pulled over to admire this beauty. i bet it's lovely in the summertime when the vines are covered in green!

farming this time of year
we have a lot of friends who are farmers. here are some photographs from some of the farms we have visited lately...showing tilled fields, seedlings, and little things pushing up through the soil...to help get you inspired for growing season!

farm day at 3 porch farm
our friends at 3 porch farm held their 3rd annual sustainable farm tour last weekend and it was a gorgeous day! they were selling veggie starts and honeypops, of course, as well as leading tours of the farm. home.made was there cooking food and treehouse lead a craft making glittered leaves, always a crowd-pleaser! and, there was great music all day too. 3 porch guesses that over 600 people came to the farm for the event, so it was a great success! if you are in the athens-area next year, you will want to come!
under the bridge
near 75 north and vinings is a wonderful river park, chattahoochee national park. there is a long walk along the river,as well as miles of woods walk. perfect for city folk to get in nature. when the trail went under 1-75,i was amazed at how it looked like a giant cathedral, the pillars 30 feet tall, with water running under and reflecting on all. what better cathedral than to have a river running through it!

musella gin
while driving through forsyth, georgia i spotted this treasure. the gin was no longer being used but was a lovely building as is. enjoy! it always is good to keep your eyes peeled for beauties like these!

a beautiful shack
well, we all know about my shack habit. this weekend i had a craving, so i drove up towards maysville and gillsville on a grey day. i found some treasures. i'm going back for more soon!
here is a little shack on the property of an old farm. i love how it looks like a corbet painting.

all that's left
when the whole house finally falls down and disintegrates into earth again, the chimney remains. what was left of this house had been bulldozed into a nearby pile and burned. usually, people will just leave the chimneys till they eventually fall down on their own. until then, they are sentinels to the memory that a life was lived there.

mt. zion
we have written about mt.zion many times before, but recently, i was in hancock county and had to stop in; it is impossible for me to not go by this place when i am near. mt.zion is actually in much better shape than it used to be...you can tell someone is caring for it by the swept floors (which used to not be the case).
enjoy the view...

almost gone
i spied this old place off a dirt road back in the woods. the doors and mantels had all been carried off. everything of value stripped out. soon it'll be gone, and no one will ever know.

painting ideas
I really want to paint abstract paintings, but I can't figure out in my mind how to go about it. maybe if i make them look like this. . . .
