hints of spring

in the country

March 4th, 2010

this winter seems to be hanging around forever.  taking a good walk in the woods let me know that spring is working to make it’s introduction.  there are budding branches everywhere!  with all of the rain we have had this winter we are expecting a colorful spring filled with lots of blooms and greenery.

signs of first spring at last!

February 25th, 2010

this past weekend was the first in months that wasn’t 40 degrees and overcast.  in fact it was sunny and 60!  believe me, i got out there and started clearing debris out of the garden and doing some sprucing up.   i spotted a clump of daffodils in the woods, so spring has announced its’ intentions to proceed.  i’m anxious to get planting in the garden, but with all the rain, it’s still too muddy to get on the tractor. soon though…

snow wonder

in the country

February 18th, 2010

i know a lot of you are sick of snow, but you have to realize that for southerners, snow is a transient beauty spectacle that’s rare, unpredictable, and wondrous.  it’s not likely to last more than a day, so i’m happy to say that we always have the good sense to take the day off and appreciate it.

a walk in the woods

we’re tired of cold grey weather here.  last weekend, even though it was just above freezing, i decided to just bundle up and head out for a long woods walk.  no signs of spring yet, but lots of interesting textures…

studying cotton

in the country

January 28th, 2010

on warmer days out in the idea shack, i can study my cotton; learning its’ symmetry and its’ gestures, absorbing its’ character and rhythm. back in my ceramics studio, i’m working out the colors and making the plates. once it all comes together – loads of cotton plates will fill the shop.

winter days

in the country

January 21st, 2010

cold days and no sign of life yet in the garden.  it won’t be long till green shoots appear, but for now, stark beauty and blue sky abounds.

snow outside, snowy cotton inside

in the country

January 14th, 2010

all fall, until december, our yard has been a muddy mess from all the rain.
when mid-december came, we hit a cold snap and all the mud froze deep.
then, one night we had a wisp of snow. not enough to coat the grass. just enough to fill the tire tracks from the tractor.
inside, i painted some snowy cotton balls on plates.
snow white cotton against blue sky, while dreaming of warmer days to come…

cotton sketches 1

We’re having a super cold snap. The ground is frozen and all the puddles have turned to ice. Time to stay inside and rest a little from the holidays. Time to enjoy the quiet and begin to let some ideas roll in as I study and draw my cotton blossoms.

Soon I’ll translate these drawings onto stacks of plates that I’ve already made. Dark brown cotton stalks with white balls with bright blue winter skies behind it.
