depending on where you are from, certain trees tell you that you are home.  to a southerner, pine trees overhead are burned into your memory banks at an early age. this time of year , you can smell the spicy pine sap rising, and it goes with the feeling of an early spring day where the sun is starting to warm the air, but the breeze is fresh and feels slightly chilly against your cheek.  it’s one of the first signs of change in the air.

last weekend  we decided to get out and see some winter beauty before it passes.  we headed towards an art museum that is out in the country near us, called the steffen thomas museum.  the drive was beautiful, past orange and blonde fields of grass, gnarled oaks against stormy spring skies, and signs of times past every where.  i got many inspirations at the museum and on the drive home.  here are some of the inspirations i got.

it is called shelter.
first published in 1973, it has historical images, photos, plans, diagrams, instructions, and words that share how to build everything from bucky balls to tents, to onion domes to adobe and beyond. there are images from every continent, all different types of people & communities, images taken indoors, outdoors, things made of wood, stone, thatch,bamboo, how to build a windmill, and a shout-ou the watts towers- you name it.
it is great.
