it’s no secret that there is no shortage of creative folks here in athens.  apparently this has always been the case.  last night we went to Cine to view the movie “the world’s smallest airport”- a documentary of the thrasher brothers aerial circus.  all i can say is, it was fantastic!

for our holiday feast,  my contribution was sweet potato pie.  we ran out of vanilla so i added some bourbon.  i think that this will be my new standard sweet potato pie!

there was enough filling for one full pie and another partially filled pie.  glad that there was left overs.

ingredients

1 pie crust, i used a pre-made crust

2 cups sweet potato puree

4 Tbsp brown butter, click here for instructions

3 eggs

1 egg yolk

3/4 cup heavy cream

1/3 cup light brown sugar

1/3 cup maple syrup

1/4 cup sea salt

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

directions

-pre-heat oven to 425 degrees

-blind bake pie crust with pie weights

-remove crust and turn oven down to 375 degrees

-mix the rest of the ingredients together

-pour filling into pie crust

-put pie into oven and bake for 50 minutes at 375 degrees

-enjoy with some freshly whipped cream, sweetened with maple syrup

our good friend amy flurry and partner nikii salk make these amazing accessories entirely from tiny pieces of hand cut paper.    this week, they will be taking their paper.cut.project to NY for fashion week.  they have designed a series of hand cut masks for designer jen kao.  i am sure it will be wonderful and inspiring- i can’t wait to see pictures.

finally had a rainy day over the weekend, so i took the opportunity to work on some sewing projects.  i feel compelled to write ‘love’ on everything lately, so i appliqued the word ‘love’ on the back itwas fun picking out the colors.  i decided never mind about hemming the edges, just stitch the heck out of it and let the edges unravel over time.  i just cut the neck hole how i wanted it, then stitched a long strip of peach calico onto the edge of the t-shirt. it will unravel slowly, too, adding charm (hopefully).  anyway, people smile when they see it, and that’s good.

for years, one of my favorite junque stores ever has been reed’s odds n’ ends.  they are right on hway 441s, between watkinsville and bishop.  whatever you need, they have it.  i’ve about furnished my whole house and yard from there.  everything from old linen tablecloths to cast iron frying pans to barn doors, yard art, cookbooks, and anything else you might need.  check out the accompanying audio piece to hear clay bolton interview mr.reed about how it all started.
