fall flora

seasonal bloom

last week, design*sponge was in town for their book tour.
it was fitting to welcome them with a southern flora sampler:

while some may think the ingredients weedy, to us they are the prettiest things to be found right now:
sweetgum, chinaberry, and ligustrum…along with beauties like hydrangea, maple leaves, and viburnum.

dahlias are one of my favorite flowers and they amaze me at every stage.  i love their symmetry, vibrant colors, and size.  any day now the dahlia farm could see their first frost which means we have a long wait for fresh dahlias…  hope i can get another visit in!

fun with flowers

instant inspiration

i had an idea for a new kind of flower arranging…….

get a big leaf, like an elephant ear or a castor bean, and cut a little hole in the center and stick an awesome flower through it, then float the whole thing in a shallow bowl. i  have an assortment of aluminum pans that i used.  a really big party size one would be awesome, but i don’t have one yet.  anyways, here’s some pics- lots of fun with close ups, too!

dahlia farm

homes and habitats

this weekend’s  weather was about as perfect as weather gets.  i crammed in so much into one day including breakfast out,  junk store hopping, rwood sale, dahlia farm, and we ended our day at the elberton fair.  not too bad for a lovely fall day.

my highlight of the day was the dahlia farm.  with the dry summer and fall that we have had i wasn’t expecting the dahlias to be too impressive but boy was i wrong!  i didn’t realize it but i was really in need of some floral therapy.  thanks mimi for letting us enjoy your beautiful gardens,  year after year
