fire in the hole

in the country

November 10th, 2011

nothing is as fun as woodfiring- quiet times out in the country.  just you and the crackling fire.  just keep throwing the wood in there to keep it hot.  all that ash is landing on the pots as it makes its way through the kiln, leaving its mark on each pot.  high hopes for the results, but since there’s no predicting the outcome, try not to get your expectations too high!

loading the wood kilns

in the country

November 3rd, 2011

i spent yesterday loading the last shelves of the wood kiln at geoff pickett’s.  it was a beautiful fall day out in the country.  steady working, figuring out what to put where, making sure the shelves are clean before we put them in the kiln, and wadding the bottoms of the pots. wadding is a mixture of stuff that you roll into a ball and stick on the bottom of the pot with some glue.  it keeps the pot up off the shelf so it (hopefully) doesn’t get stuck from all the salt and drippy glaze. here’s geoff putting wads on a pot and placing it carefully in the kiln.  today the doors will be bricked up, then we’ll light the fires!

dahlia farm

homes and habitats

October 12th, 2011

this weekend’s  weather was about as perfect as weather gets.  i crammed in so much into one day including breakfast out,  junk store hopping, rwood sale, dahlia farm, and we ended our day at the elberton fair.  not too bad for a lovely fall day.

my highlight of the day was the dahlia farm.  with the dry summer and fall that we have had i wasn’t expecting the dahlias to be too impressive but boy was i wrong!  i didn’t realize it but i was really in need of some floral therapy.  thanks mimi for letting us enjoy your beautiful gardens,  year after year

the second of november. KATHRYN REFI

instant inspiration

October 29th, 2010

we have a handful of inspiring people that work at the rwood studio.  everyone has their hands in various projects such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, music, comedy, performance art, and writing.  we all inspire one another and support one another in our creative endeavors.

on the second of november, one of our artists;  kathryn refi is having an opening of her latest project.  she will be showing two bodies of work both centered around the day she was born.  the first is a group of pastel and charcoal drawings of events that happened the day that she was born.  the second is a group of graphite drawings of new york times crossword puzzles that she worked.  kathryn noted that there was one year that the paper was not printed due to a printing strike.
