this thanksgiving, our family went to the mountains. we had beautiful weather the whole time and went on lots of long walks in the woods. since we were away from home, we decided to have a non-traditional holiday meal. mostly, we were guided by what came in our CSA box: we had sliced watermelon radishes on our green salad; we roasted veggies, simply in olive oil and sea salt; we had sweet potato casserole, of course, because, well, we love sweet potatoes. we also grilled salmon on cedar planks made by our friends, and fellow athenians, fire & flavor. the most fun was walking in the woods with my oldest son to gather ingredients for our table centerpiece: feathers, leaves, rocks, nuts, mixed in with persimmons and lemons from our home garden.
