ikebana book
this is the time of year when i am drawn to ikebana. all that is left in the garden are pods and stems, with a few sasanquas here and there. this book from japan always inspires me (i think i may have shared it here before, because i love it so much!). there are some beautiful moments inside it. hopefully it will encourage you to try a simple flower arrangement this winter too!

flower centerpiece
here's a fun idea for a table centerpiece or just for fun.
use any kind of shallow round container. i used one of my favorite geoff pickett wood fired casseroles. cut some oasis to fit and cover with water so the oasis will soak it up.
i used green hydrangea flowers and red and pink roses for mine. i put one light pink rose in the center, surrounded it with red roses, then put a ring of hydrangea blossoms on the outside. ,ames a lovely centerpiece that looks good from the side or the top!

arrangements in woodfired vases
my front yard garden is set to do amazing things, so i cleaned and scrubbed the pollen off my front porch, bought shelves for all the vases starting to take over every surface in my house, and organized all my tools. now i have a proper flower arranging studio (except now the mosquitos have come out). this will be the summer of flower arrangements. i just woodfired about 85 new vases i made. they all have a dry look to the glaze that makes them perfect for japanese-y flower arranging. here's a few new vases at work.

flower brigade: kat & susan's wedding
this past weekend, our good friends and owners of sweet olive farm, kat & susan, tied the knot. of course, the celebration wouldn't have been complete without bundles of flowers from mandy of 3 porch farm!

poppies
i still have some flowers left over from our spring beauty day…some of mandy’s beautiful poppies.
after arranging them in a simple kenzan, i left them in my studio to dry…i love the faded colors and shapes they made!

mandy and steve's pt. 2
last week, we visited mandy and steve's beautiful farm outside of athens to pick some flowers while they were out of town. we wandered all over their property and took in all the beauty...not only do they have rows and rows of cultivated flowers, they also have wonderful old perennials and large shrubs, as well as wooded areas with lots of native things to cut from, too. it is a flower arranger's dream!
here are some of the arrangements we created at the farm, and at later once we were at home. we all brought home buckets of flowers and made flower arrangements for days after our visit!

mandy's spring blooms, part two...
mandy shared some more arrangements with us and they are gorgeous! all of the ingredients were grown by mandy or foraged by her...perfect seasonal beauty!

a flower with love
i love this little book. i am a big fan of bruno munari; he created so many things that i love, many of them for children...this little book sits near my desk in the studio and i flip through it often. where else can you get a sunny dose of color as well as ikebana tips, complete with instructions for using a half of a potato as a kenzan (flower frog)? i also love the section at the end where he invites the reader on a woodland walk...it isn't until 4 pages later that you realize that the woodland is actually a terrarium of moss and rocks...but the point is clear: bring nature inside and enjoy it.

kinfolk community gathering
we were very happy to discover kinfolk magazine when they published their first issue. we were even happier to be able to contribute, in a small way, to a few of their issues through our photos. so, now, we are equally happy to be hosting a dinner, here in athens, georgia, on their behalf...
on saturday, may 4, we will be hosting one of an on-going series of community gatherings- this one, a flower potluck. tickets are available here. there will be concurrent dinners happening all over the globe- athens is in good company!
we will walk through the garden, cut some flowers then have a simple flower arranging workshop led by rinne. we will also have food & drink provided by our friend nathan brand of the national and shotgun dinners. our friend hope hilton will be illustrating something special for each guest, and kristen and rinne will be talking photographs, so we will share them with you soon.
so, until then go grab some flowers, wherever you are and enjoy them.

glimpses of our thanksgiving
this thanksgiving, our family went to the mountains. we had beautiful weather the whole time and went on lots of long walks in the woods. since we were away from home, we decided to have a non-traditional holiday meal. mostly, we were guided by what came in our CSA box: we had sliced watermelon radishes on our green salad; we roasted veggies, simply in olive oil and sea salt; we had sweet potato casserole, of course, because, well, we love sweet potatoes. we also grilled salmon on cedar planks made by our friends, and fellow athenians, fire & flavor. the most fun was walking in the woods with my oldest son to gather ingredients for our table centerpiece: feathers, leaves, rocks, nuts, mixed in with persimmons and lemons from our home garden.
