moonflower design's online flower calendar
our friends mandy and steve at moonflower design recently re-launched their website with a great new feature…an online flower calendar! searchable by month, the calendar shows what blooms at what time at their farm and the areas they forage in. it has great photos so you can really see what each specimen looks like. it is very handy if you are thinking about hiring moonflower to do flowers for an event because you can easily see what may be blooming at that time. also, it is a good resource for any gardener, to see what blooms in our area when, if you yourself are looking to grow things at certain times. of course, not everything will grow at the exact same time every year, but this calendar is a helpful reminder of how many beautiful things are available to those who are looking…

old outbuildings
i visited the william harris homestead near monroe, georgia recently. the home was built in 1825 and is still in the same family. the house sits on a hill overlooking the food gardens, and all kinds of intact wood, stone, and brick outbuildings are still in place. a smoke house, a salt house, stables, and several other wonderful old shapes. here's a tour. worth the trip!

old civic center
on my recent trip to central illinois, we stumbled upon this old civic center in the middle of a park. it was obviously old, but it still seemed to be of some function to the town. the massive structure is known for its architecture, in that there are no post supports holding up the octagonal dome. i wish i could have gotten inside!

story of the land camp
in late june, rinne and two friends (jesslyn shields of fall line south and tabatha tucker) led a week long day camp for children out at sweet olive farm. it was part farm camp, part ecology camp, part art camp, and part play-in-the-woods camp. it was so much fun! we spent each day helping on the farm, exploring the woods and learning to be quiet observers, curious explorers and creative foragers. we had a great group of guest teachers come in and talk to us about ecology, history, art, weaving, and storytelling and by the end of the week everyone had written their own story of this special land.

family barn
i recently took a trip to central illinois for a family reunion. one of the best parts of the trip was driving around these farm roads, paved with gooey tar, to see where my grandparents and great-grandparents lived. most of their homes are not standing anymore, but this barn remained next to the site of my great-grandmothers old home. my mother and grandmother with me, and it was so interesting to hear their stories and memories from this old barn. whoever owns it now will probably let it sit here to rot and disappear into the corn fields like so many other old structures in rural illinois.

boat textures
Our family loves the water, every chance we get we try to find our way to the beach. One of my favorite things to do at the beach is wander around the local pier. I love checking out the fishing boats and all of the colors, shapes, and beauty that comes along with it.

winterville community garden
winterville is located just outside athens, although technically it is part of at the athens/clarke county community...they have a sweet little community garden right across the street from their community park. the community garden is vibrant and well-utilized- there is always something growing there!
